I think an convincing argument can be made that he is an "good" player. Clearly he doesn't suck and neither is he an all star. Good sounds about right.
Man you just love starting stuff lol
I think it's a mistake to let him go. If they wanted to start Alexander instead, which is fine, they should have done everything they could to trade TJ, while making sure the entire NFL thought they'd start TJ and were happy with him.
But the real issue for me is this: I think McDonald is a very good strong safety,
if the free safety (especially) is good as well. He needs help in coverage, so he can do what he does best: attack. He's kind of a classic strong safety guy, and best paired with a classic free safety with serious range and coverage skills.
With few exceptions ever, players are going to be handicapped or elevated by their surroundings to a ginormous degree, and with "succeed or fail" based on that -- on their fellow players, coaches, scheme, etc. etc. IMO, put TJ in the right defense, and he can be an All-Pro. The Rams lacked (and still lack) the free safety (and likely the corners) to get him there.
Who the heck was gonna trade for him? That's totally unrealistic Billy.
TJ had no trade value nor could they trade him because he wasn't under contract.
He's not Wade Phillips type of safety, he's very limited in his skill set.
He's actually exactly what he was at SC, a player that you had to cover up on your defense!
Best,
