I agree about Quick. Overdrafted at the time but had the skills to develop with the right support. His best stretch was those first 7 games of 2014 before he got hurt.
On Alex Barron, I think it was a pure desire thing with him. His heart just never seemed in it. On pure talent alone he was a decent OT. In that 2005 draft he was widely considered one of the top 15 players in the draft so the Rams landing him at 19th that year was considered really good. I remember being thrilled getting him, personally...
You might be right about Barron just not loving the game all that much. We're hearing more and more players admit this, too.
The Rams had a DE who was among the first to either imply that or say it straight up -- at least in my memory: Kevin Carter. He was also freakishly athletic coming out of college, but often played up to that. Not always, but often. If I'm not mistaken, he said he'd rather make music, and I have no problem with that. It's up to each and every player whether or not they love the game, etc. I don't hold that against them if they have other dreams and goals. But the game is so demanding, it's probably not helpful if a player's heart isn't all in.
