Does Donald need an extension this year and why?

Even if they give him one, most likely his 2017 salary will stay the same. When Quinn got an early extension after year 3, it didn't change his cap hit in the 4th year. The huge hit came in the 5th year.

Something similar for Donald would put a huge cap hit in 2018. It could even be 2019. Tru's franchise tag this year doesn't affect either one of those years.

Tree is going to a new defense. I'm betting they want to see how he performs too before committing to big money. And given his past performance, which hasn't been exactly stellar, I think that's wise.

Now that free agency is pretty much over, I'm not seeing anything for them to spend Tru's money on.
