That signing was the single biggest position upgrade in the NFL that year (from G. Robinson to Whitworth) and was a huge part of their turnaround. And now the fact that he will be their LT for the 5th season just makes it all the more impressive a signing. Five years in he's not just a guy that was with them for a little while, he's a Ram as much as he was a Bengal.
Whitworth is a rare animal--a still good LOT who is a free agent. The Bengals completely screwed up on this. Trades are more frequent, but you usually don't count on free agency to fill that spot with a viable starter.
So a great moment of good fortune for the Rams. They needed a left OT and Whitworth, really, was their only option to get a good one--and again, you usually don't count on free agency to get a player like that. Teams usually keep them.
