In other words, things go wrong

And the entire reason the Falcons should not have been calling plays like that in that situation of the game is because the risks far outweighed the rewards. Rather than calling plays that gave the Patriots the best opportunity to get back in the game, they should have been calling plays that prioritized protecting the football and running the clock.

A missed assignment on a running play may cost them the first down, but it also gains them another minute off the clock. Precious time that the Patriots required to keep any hopes of a comeback alive. Running the ball and punting in that situation was still a big win for Atlanta. It would have pointed the way to a Super Bowl ring as much as a big completion to Julio Jones would have, only with almost none of the downside risk. Instead they chose to do exactly what the Patriots required them to do in order to stay alive.

Somebody decided to risk a comfortable win to stroke his ego. He ended up with neither.
