Was it scheme or talent? Did they draft the wrong players, or did they simply not develop them well enough?
All of the above.
My sense of these things is that its difficult to pinpoint responsibility for success or failure. Not impossible, but difficult, because so many factors are at play.
Robinson is pretty clearly a bust at LT. But how about Havenstein, who has looked good and bad? How about our run offense, which clicked in '15 and failed in '16 with a lot of the same players? How about the complex relationships between passing and running offense which lead to differing reactions by the defense? How about confusion, which kills performance?
An OL is a complex unit that requires 5 guys to coordinate their efforts without hesitation. AND it interacts with QBs and receivers. All in complex schemes that may be confused or astute and then face the challenge of defenses deploying in a myriad ways.
Look. This is no defense of anyone. I'm just saying I find it hard to pass judgments on a unit like this without knowing a vastly complex context. SOmetimes, it can seem pretty clear that a players can't cut it, with enough sample size and seeing the player fail in enough situations. But a player can look pretty bad in numerous situations and thrive in others.
I think we need a LT, unless we put Saffold there and trust his health.
Other than that ... I dunno nuffink!
