... wasn't so great. Charlie Weis. Romeo Crennel. McDaniels flamed out in Denver. O'Brien is still a work-in-progress in Houston. (Wish the Rams were at that level right now.)
But you look back on the staff he had in Cleveland, and a couple of names jump out. Most notably, Mr. Warmth, Nick Saban, and long-time Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, who for about a five-year stretch there, from about 2003-2008, was constantly being mentioned in connection to various NFL jobs.
No point beyond that ... other than hiring coaches will always be a crap-shoot. Just as player personnel is.
For example ... Forrest Evashevski was Green Bay's first choice for head coach in 1959. When Evy turned 'em down, they hung their head and settled on Vince Lombardi.
And Lombardi? None of the people who ever worked for him, in terms of being a coach, succeeded - Bill Austin; Paul Bengston; Norb Hecker; Tom Fears. Even his former players struggled badly - Bart Starr and Forrest Gregg, for example.
Lots of hand-wringing for something that basically exists on the wind.
