off by the numbers
per pff Goff's worst routes comeback routes -19.6 Go routes -10.9, Quick outs -5.6 , corner -.3, and HB screens -2.4 best routes posts +36.6, slant +26.5 and wr/te screens +28.5 out routes +26.2 and crossing +22.5. compared to average college QB
13 int in 2015 and PFF said none happened when Goff was under pressure.
PFF also said struggled recognizing zone coverages and specifically mentioned struggled to identify cover 2 defenses in games...”When watching the tape the only real struggles that showed up were when Goff was presented with a zone defense. Against man coverage he is almost on autopilot” “ Also “One legitimate issue with a lot of spread offenses is that it is all predicated on pre-snap reads. You line up, you see what it has caused the defense to do, and you know right away where you are likely to go with the football. The NFL is all about post-snap reads. Defenses will show you one thing before playing something else. Playing quarterback in the NFL involves processing so much information post-snap that it’s incredibly difficult to see if quarterbacks are capable of doing it until they are asked to.“ Over the years I've noticed a strong correlation between a players verbal fluency and mental processing speed.
Let that sink in Goff with his 36 wonderlic and 37 career starts can't read coverages. Maybe more accurately can't mentally process zone coverages.just lacks the innate ability to feel/visualize opposition players are in a zone...sort of a big deal in the NFLPff Goff compared to 23 other of his peers(inexplicably left off Wentz) was 3rd rated behind Brandon Doughty and Matt Johnson and just ahead of Nick Arbuckle.so much for great college stats and future NFL success.
They also breaks down what he does best...Goff has elite numbers 6-10 yards +13.2, 11-20 yards +7.3 and 21-30 yard range +11.8..he owns those mid range passes in the middle of the field...those passes made him the #1 pick in the draft. Elite vision/touch in the middle of the field under pressure
Outliers
antsy feet/arm strength
pff lists as a weakness Goff's antsy feet...loses touch/velocity when his feet aren't set. Those wounded ducks/bad spirals and those soft passes outside the hash marks..Goff's strength of being able to move inside the pocket is also his weakness..just lacks the arm to throw flat footed. You see that in the difference between his quick outs vs out routes..quick outs are more flat footed throws. Just lacks the arm..In his 1st 9 games as a Rams see how Goff's best throws are down the middle of the field..
outside he really needs a clean pocket and have his feet set to be successfulPocket passer
Goff is a pocket passer playing in an era of athletic QB's.. Wilson, Luck, Wentz, Precott, Jameis Winston and Cam Newton all can run..only recent pocket passer to succeed is Derek Carr who has an elite arm surrounded by great skill players/oline and much better athlete then Goff based on combine numbers
hand size
saw another fumble yesterday. 4th? in 5 starts. just doesn't take much for Goff to lose the ball and it will only get worse. DC will have his players really swiping after the ball. 23 fumbles in college.
"ESPN's Todd McShay wrote that hand size equates to ball security and that since 2008, less than 10 percent of quarterbacks measured at the combine had hands 9 inches or smaller."
athleticism
Goff 27 vertical 4.47 shuttle and 7.17 3 cone are outlers at the QB position..all in the bottom 10% of QB's Even Mannion had overall better numbers 31 vertical , 4.39 shuttle and 7.29 3 cone just don't find successful QB's in the last 10 years with Goff's combine numbers
size
pencil thin arms/legs almost got killed on the qb read option vs Atlanta and was knocked senseless by an average hit by Sherman. Similar to small boned Bridgewater who is injured.
Just too small to last as a NFL QB Just another outlier...simply shouldn't be out there unless he gains 20 more lbs...
success after 9 games vs his peers
w
hether based on qb rating or pff rankings..dead last after his 1st 9 games vs recent QB's..another outlier..eventually you are your stats. Fans have to accept that reality
Personality type
most hof qb's are ESTP's on the Myers Briggs ..Brees/Brady are No. 9 types (ENFPs in Myers-Briggs). So Much of future success is based on these kids personality/drive to succeed.
You want arrogant fighter pilots for your QB's not polite, nice introverts. Goff comes across as shy in his interviews and on the field demeanor. I see nothing to suggest he has the "Right Stuff" in his personality. or read little about his win at costs, driven to succeed personality..another outlier
Where Goff excels
elite short intermediate range passer wirh P Manning/Brady like times to deliver the ball consistently in that low 2.25/2.3 sec range. Very quick delivery. Good feet in the pocket...feels pressure
conclusion
looking for comparisons/solutions maybe Montana and the West Coast offense...sure won't last in a vertical offense. Has the tools to succeed(except for reading zone coverages and below average rating to passes to HB's) as a wco qb....also Gurley is an anti-wco rb. Really need an elite receiving rb who can also pass protect. a fast pass catching te and a big bodied, over the middle wr. Austin ain't it. Also 2017 looks to be a very good year for guard/center free agents..Rams have to spend money on at least one . add great year to find top wr's and te's in the draft at top of the 2nd rd...great talentIMO I've seen enough of Goff this year. Right now too small to play. Bring him back as the 3rd qb next year and start Mannion over Keenum. Mannion might be the best QB on this team. Goff just has so many outliers when I look at him....sure looks like a probable bust right now.
