Monday Wrap-Up: Finishing the Season Strong

By Myles Simmons

Heading into Week 14 at 4-8, the Rams are in a position that likely feels a bit too familiar.

The club sported the same record at this point last year, coming off a five-game losing streak during which it averaged just 10.8 points per game. But, the team was able to go 3-1 in the last quarter of 2015 to end the season 7-9.

While 4-8 is certainly not the record Los Angeles came into the season expecting at this point, head coach Jeff Fisher expressed confidence that the Rams will be able to finish the season strong in his weekly press conference on Monday evening.

“We’re going to play hard, we’re going to compete,” Fisher said. “We have challenges, from a defensive standpoint, with respect to the quarterbacks that we’re playing. But I fully expect us to finish strong. This team is very, very close. It’s very close.”

L.A. has dropped seven of its last eight games after starting the season 3-1. And as it was on Sunday, offensive production has been a significant issue during the stretch. The Rams are averaging a league-low 15.0 points per game, recording only 10 points or fewer in five of their last six.

Sustaining drives to get into scoring position was one of Los Angeles’ biggest problems in Sunday’s 26-10 loss to New England. Aside from a kneel to end the second quarter, seven of the Rams’ 12 drives ended in three plays or fewer. And the Rams finished just 1-of-12 in third-down efficiency.

According to Fisher, that mark could have been raised if L.A. could have avoided on-field mistakes.

“We had three third down drops that would have probably ended up being conversions,” Fisher said.

Those drops had a lot to do with quarterback Jared Goff’s overall numbers. The rookie finished 14-of-32 passing for 161 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Fisher said he’s seen an encouraging progression from the signal-caller, but would also like to see improvement when it comes to the players assigned to protect him.
