I have a similar story... perhaps not as dramatic.
It took place back when the transition to seatbelts was just beginning and there was debate.. you'll get that, most here will kind of get it but not really. Remember the debate about whether you were safer with a seat belt or not? Being trapped in a car because of a seat belt? That debate was legitimate, (wrong, but still worthy of debate)...
I converted early. My kids were very young... I believed in seat belts from the get-go. My sister, did not. The worst fight my sister and I ever got into was because I would not allow my son to ride with her home from 'someplace', (I don't remember where we were).... because he wouldn't be in a seat belt. The fight was, to say the least, ferocious... for months after this we did not speak.
Until annoying seat belt warning buzzers my sister refused to wear a seat belt ALTHOUGH.. she did, not long after our big fight, put her kids in seat belts.. and has done so ever since.
