Since Jack Youngblood has always been my favorite player and since I live in NY the question that was posed is the same question I have been hit with for years. Not that I have to justify it.
Lets see what Jack has to say.
No one says you have to justify it...I have no idea what Jack will say, but now you have an answer you can give those people. If they are the ones who think the left tackle was somehow a premier position back then, like it is considered now, you can educate them. And you can use examples. Plus, there are a lot more examples.
But, it seemed to me you didn't know what to tell these "critics" and now you do have some information you didn't have before. So if you are hit with that now, you can put an end to the nonsense. And if those people really think that, then they really lack basic football knowledge, no sense of history, don't know who the good tackles were in the 60s-early 80s and who the good DEs were back then.
If they are Jets fans, why did the Jets spend a 1st round pick in 1977 on a right tackle, Marvin Powell. In 1978 the Giants drafted a tackle in teh 1st round, Gordon King, and they played him at right tackle.
So the evidence is overwhelming and it would be fun to see what the response of those uneducated NY fans would say when presented with the facts.
