I suspect that the Rams are playing it cool right now because they don't want to appear to be without compassion for a guy who obviously is having severe mental health issues. Don't know if it is drug related, or psychological, or physical at this point.

But the pragmatic side is that the Rams are deep in young RBs and they don't need the challenges of a mentally ill player; he's not a game changing Superstar that you bend over backwards to try and accommodate. He's off the media radar right now, and the Rams sure has heck don't want Mason to become a headline.

I suspect there is a category for placing a player in this situation whereby he doesn't count against the salary cap. The Rams have proven themselves to be pretty conscious of the human side of the equation and I'm sure want to do nothing to make the situation more difficult for Mason.
