It was most likely part of the script going into the game should something particularly embarrassing about their performance show up. People don't seem to realize that much of the narrative and quips they hear during a game were determined during pre-production planning. Some are just much better at deviating from the scripts than others when the game itself deviates from it. Al Michaels, for instance.
I have been a fan of McDonough's understated, sometimes sardonic style in the paste. I liked Tirioco too, but I was happy to hear McDonough would replace him after he left. I'm not sure how well it will end up blending with Gruden's style, but the Summerall / Maden team worked well so this one could too given some time together.
