It's 60/40 that Snead trades the 1st rounder for a vet player

January 28, 2024 02:08AM
It's hard for me to see Snead using that 1st round pick to draft a player. That hasn't been his MO. Rather, I think the odds are that he'll use it as a poker chip in order to acquire a top, young vet Edge Rusher from a team that is otherwise going to Franchise tag a great player to keep him off the market. The questions are whether or not the Rams think that player exists and if that player can be pried away from his current team, and that will largely depend on whether that player wants to stay where he is or move on to LA to play for McVay and a championship oriented team.

Here's the thing: when you analyze value versus success, 1st round picks must be the riskiest of all picks. Using that 1st rounder to acquire a vet player with a proven successful track record and a system fit is the least risky use possible for that pick, and maximizes the probably of getting the most from the inherent value of the pick. On the other hand it can be costly because of the salary difference for a 1st rounder vs. the salary of a top vet player. So, it's all about a player acquisition philosophy and how to use the cap dollars most effectively. Snead has thus far preferred the least risky way.

If you like several QBs trade down and get a QB
