As LA Rams are paralyzed, Panthers strike quickly with this DC hire

The LA Rams are stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. What do I mean? Well, it comes down to this. Despite all of the lobbying and discontent from Rams fans, the team remains committed to defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. While his style of defense has not given fans a warm and fuzzy, he has had to make do with a roster that has weaknesses.

As the saying goes, you can’t get blood out of a turnip. And the LA Rams defense, which struggled to apply pressure on quarterbacks and opted to give a noticeable cushion to opposing receivers, was called out by fans. Was it a fair assessment? Probably not, because the once prolific LA Rams offense put up its worst offensive performance under head coach Sean McVay.

Right now, the LA Rams are at risk of losing Raheem Morris, as he is in consideration to be hired by the Indianapolis Colts for their vacant head coach position. The trouble is that he has been in the running for a month, and the Colts are now setting up a third round of interviews for up to eight candidates. That all but paralyzes any NFL team with a coach in the running, including the LA Rams.

But in the meantime, the Rams have to be concerned about their defense. More than a week ago, we had named three candidates who were solid options for the LA Rams defensive coordinator position should Morris be hired, and we just brought up the fact that the Rams would be wise to look at the Denver Broncos staff for replacements to their coaching staff.

Vic Fangio is off the market. Now another top option is signing elsewhere.

So what’s the trouble? The Rams still have an option for Brian Flores or promoting DL coach Eri Henderson. Well, Flores is now rumored to be in strong contention to take the vacated DC role of the Minnesota Vikings.

No, the sky is not falling for the LA Rams. Coach Henny is my favorite for any Rams DC option, as he is exactly the tough-minded beat-them-in-the-trenches type of guy who will toughen up the Rams defense in ways that we may not even realize.

But the Rams are stuck in limbo. Does the team plan to hire defensive positional coaches without a handle on who their DC will be? Or does the team play the waiting game, and let the Colts dictate the terms of the Rams’ timetable over hiring new coaches?

In either case, this is not an enviable situation for the LA Rams. And for the near-term future, this matter is unlikely to be resolved. Buckle up for now, as this appears to be a ride with lots of twists, turns, and sudden stops.
