Why Whitworth would sign an extension

February 23, 2019 06:44AM
Right now Whitworth counts $16.7M against the cap in 2019 [overthecap.com]

$10M salary (not guaranteed)
$5.2M prorated signing bonus
$1.5M in bonuses

If the Rams offered an extension as follows Whit would jump all over it.

$2M salary in 2019 (guaranteed)
$8M signing bonus
$1.5M in bonuses (same as current contract)
$10M salary in 2020 (not guaranteed) <== this number could be any amount, really. It doesn't affect anything if Whit retires after this season

This essentially converts $8M of this year's salary to a signing bonus.

Why would Whit do this? The signing bonus is guaranteed and it is paid right now (as opposed to game checks, which are spread over the season in 17 installments) and his 2019 salary is guaranteed.

Why would the Rams do this? It clears $4M in cap space this season where they currently have $24.7M in cap space and moves it to 2020 where they currently have $88.9M. [overthecap.com]

If Whit retires after this season the Rams have $4M in dead money in 2020 in exchange for $4M in cap space this year.
