NFL.com ranks Rams' defensive line 3rd in the league

The Los Angeles Rams had one of the best tandems on the defensive line last season in All-Pro Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers. They anchored the defensive front, but the Rams were still lacking a dominant presence at nose tackle.

Enter Ndamukong Suh.

The Rams signed the three-time All-Pro this offseason to fill that gaping hole in the middle of the defensive line, giving Los Angeles one of the best units in all of football. But how does it stack up to the rest of the defensive lines in the NFL?

Well, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com listed his top-eight groups in the league right now and the Rams checked in at No. 3 behind the Eagles (2) and Jaguars (1).

Teams shouldn’t even try to run on the Rams when Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers are on the field together. That should make the opposition one dimensional, allowing defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to cook up pressures and get the ball into the hands of his equally talented secondary.

There’s no question that the Rams’ top edge rushers — Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre — are dangerously unproven. That keeps the group from topping this list, but the pass rushers should be able to roam free, with all the beef up front attracting double teams. The system will carry them.

Rosenthal called Donald “the best overall lineman in football,” which is high (but deserving) praise. He’s the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and many would argue that he’s the top player on that side of the ball anywhere in the league.

What hurts the Rams is the fact that they don’t have established players at outside linebacker, which isn’t technically a defensive line position. Ebukam and Longacre project as the starters right now – especially with Ogbonnia Okoronkwo injuring his foot – and it’s unlikely the Rams will add any reinforcements at that spot.

The presence of Donald, Suh and Brockers alone should mitigate the holes at edge rusher, but to what extent remains to be seen.
