Outlining the options years of our star players...

March 12, 2018 07:05AM
Player 5th Year Option
Aaron Donald 2018
Todd Gurley 2019
Marcus Peters 2019
Jared Goff 2020

Now...take into consideration you tagged Joyner and you haven't signed Watkins.

As I see it, technically, we control things this year if nothing happens. Although, it presents massive issues after this season.

I do not really see any way around using 5th year options to navigate this process.

If Aaron Donald is not signed this year, it's going to get ugly.

If Joyner plays like he did in 2018, you're going to have to have to sign him before next March or he is gone, especially if Donald isn't signed.

The order of signing should be (excluding Watkins since he is not under contract)...IMO...

1) Donald - sign in 2018 (he will be 27 this year)
2) Joyner - sign in 2019 (I want to see another year, he will be 28 this year)
3) Gurley - pick up 5th year option, sign in 2020 (he will be 26 year old in 2020)
4) Peters - pick up 5th year option, tag in 2020, sign in 2021 (he will be 28 in 2021)
5) Goff - pick up 5th year option, tag in 2021, sign in 2022 (he will be 28 in 2022)

If I had to pick one player of the 5 I don't sign according to this schedule...it's Joyner.

There is wiggle room. But we need to start getting our star players signed long term.

FWIW - Watkins (he will be 25 this year)
