Have been pondering this thought
Up for discussion
On the OL, OT often moved to Guard
On the DL, you have techniques and some times dudes can flex to multiple spots
Look at Hampton, Brennan, even Clowney - athletically, could they not flex inside if some stoutness and size, but possibly with better athleticism?
Hampton would get destroyed at 5T. OTs would run him down the field like a sled on run downs.
Brennan may be a candidate to move inside, especially if he is on the outside looking in on the edge. But the more interior you get the more you get subjected to problems guys like him aren't going to be able to solve, like handling doubles. Now maybe playing over the tackle is something he could grow into, but on a contender it's not easy winning a roster spot as a conversion project.
Clowney can play the run when he wants to, but he's not physical in his game, never has been, so as he is transitioned inside you lose the strengths he does give you. And he's probably not a culture fit for the Rams.
Bottom line is the spot you want a dude who has athleticism is 3T, but to pull that off requires a lot of things the rush types can't do. This is why a true pass rush threat at 3T is the toughest thing to find in the draft on defense. They go high, and many don't ever grow into real rush threats. So a guy like AD was ultra rare.
