The boardwalk looks the same so it's difficult for visitors to pick up where Manhattan Beach ends and Hermosa Beach begins.
In my day 22d st was the beach to hang out at. That's where the "beach girls" from Mira Costa High would be (like my eventual wife). She and other beach rats called us "flatlanders" because we would have to drove from South L.A to "their beach" and "take over" by playing football on the sand whereas their boyfriends would be out surfing the waves which they thought was "way cooler".
