Some of Verse's prospect rankings: Daniel Jeremiah & others

Daniel Jeremiah
Florida State · Edge · Senior
Rank #14 overall

Verse is a rugged, twitched-up edge rusher with a thick/powerful build. At Florida State, he moved around the defensive front. Against the pass, he explodes off the edge and tries to run right through offensive tackles, doing so in two different ways: 1)

He will stutter to get OTs off balance and then charge right through with his hands; or 2) he'll simply bury his head into the blocker's chest and walk him right back to the quarterback. He has also been effective using a chop/swim move and occasional inside counter.

He doesn't have elite bend at the top of his rush. When aligned inside, he relies more on his quickness to work the edge of an offensive guard. Against the rush, he is stout at the point of attack. He closes the back door quickly on runs away from him with great speed and effort. Overall, Verse is not only a productive pass rusher -- he's a violent tempo setter for the defense.

WalterFootball.com - #2 Ranked Edge rusher Jared Verse, DE, Florida State

4/23/24: In 2023, Verse totaled 41 tackles, nine sacks and two passes batted. He collected 6.5 of his sacks against some weak offensive lines in Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Florida. Verse can beat offensive tackles with power or quickness. He has some stiffness as a pass rusher, and that has some teams sources grading him as a late first- or early second-round pick for the 2024 NFL Draft. However, this draft lacks edge-rushing talent overall, so Verse could end up as a top-20 selection.

9/2/23: Verse had a great start to open 2022, showing pass-rush ability and speed around the corner in a dominant performance versus LSU while recording three sacks and seven tackles. On the year, Verse recorded 47 tackles and nine sacks.

Team sources who have seen Verse in person say he is a good-looking kid with strength and athletic ability. They note he runs well, plays hard, and has impressive tools. However, they feel Verse is raw and not naturally instinctive. Those issues are not surprising considering the huge jump in competition that Verse made for 2022. However, he still impressed last season.

Verse started out his collegiate career at Albany before transferring to the Seminoles for 2022. At Albany, Verse was very undersized and added weight while switching from tight end to defensive end. Playing in 15 games over two seasons, Verse totaled 74 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, 14.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

2024 NFL Prospect Rankings: Edge

#1 Edge rusher Jared Verse Florida State

Powerful athletic edge defender with an explosive first step and outstanding chase ability. Plays with a high motor and is relentless in pursuit. Teams have to scheme to account for his quickness and speed.

Shows solid bend and squeeze to get around the corner along with agility to adjust to quarterback movement. He has a wide variety of pass rush moves including a bull rush into a move, arm under, spin, push pull and cross chop.

Quickness and agility allow him to counter inside vs. oversetting tackles. Moves well laterally and is solid playing perimeter runs. Can turn his quickness into power both in the pass rush and playing the run. Can play a little tall and may lack ideal flexibility.

Fox Sports #2 Ranked Edge Rusher Jared Verse, Florida State — 6-4, 254, Redshirt Junior

Overview: Like the aforementioned Latu, Verse began and ended his college career in different locations, initially starring at Albany (an FCS school), before emerging as one of the brightest success stories of the transfer portal with two dominant seasons at Florida State. He averaged 45 tackles, including 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks in his two years with the Seminoles, becoming the first FSU defender to earn back-to-back First Team All-ACC honors since another first-round edge rusher — Reinard Wilson — in 1995-1996.

Strengths
Impressive blend of size, speed and power including excellent weight-room strength (31 repetitions in the bench press).
Whether out of the two- or three-point stance, Verse shows good initial quickness as a speed rusher, with a quality counter and various nuanced pass rush moves to beat would-be blockers in close quarters.

Has a phenomenal swim move.
Excellent coordination of his upper and lower halves to beat the man in front of him.
Good feel for what blockers are trying to do to stop him, sniffing out cut and crackback blocks, as well as misdirection.
High-effort defender who showed significant improvement in run defense in 2023.

Concerns
A quality athlete but not exceptional.
Quicker vertically than he is laterally, showing some stickiness on stunts and when asked to drop into coverage.
Bad habit of lowering his head into contact with ballcarriers, losing sight of his target and failing to wrap securely, leading to broken tackles.

Summary: Verse could have entered the 2023 NFL draft and earned a first-round selection but returned to Tallahassee for a shot at a national championship and to become a more well-rounded player. Sure, he's physically gifted and two seasons of top production in the ACC erase any doubts about his level of competition. It is the maturity Verse showed on and off the field, however, that makes him one of the safer and more pro-ready defenders in this class.
