Roster strategy. Draft for unstoppable O? Or to imediately improve the D?

April 21, 2024 02:12AM
As I've read with interest so many good posts on this board, and read some various former GM and HC articles on the draft, it seems clear to me that the Rams will go one of two directions, and that first pick will tell us which direction it is.

Direction 1: build an unstoppable O. Develop a good enough D.
Direction 2: bolster an already very good O. But focus on drafting D to build a very good D to go with their very good O.

Going in direction 1, the Rams could well use their 1st pick on a WR they think has All-Pro WR1 ability and will contribute immediately to give them 4 upper level WRs plus a tremendously good RB and one of the top 5 passers in the NFL in Stafford. They look later for D help in the draft, and continue signing some defensive cast off vets that are bound to be cut from teams, while giving their young guys opportunities to develop and start on the Dline and Edge.

Going in direction 2, the Rams go D with 3 of their first 4 picks, and maybe all 4, with the belief that their O is very good as is, and that if they hit on the players they draft, by mid year those young D players will make the Rams D a top 10 or 12 defense.

As I said, I think what they do with their 1st pick will tell us immediately what the strategy is going to be. As always, the Rams organization is tight lipped about their plans and so nobody outside the Rams FO knows what they intend.
