Los Angeles Rams Transcripts - Offensive Linemen Jonah
Jackson & Kevin Dotson, Tight End Colby Parkinson -
Thursday, March 14, 2024

Offensive Lineman Jonah Jackson

(On what it means to be a part of the Rams)

“It means a lot. It's such a prestigious place and there's a lot of history to this
and it's a great team. I'm elated and excited to just be a part of this program
and just contribute as much as I can.”

(On the major point of emphasis to sign with the Rams)

“I had some familiarity with (Qcool smiley (Matthew) Stafford. I had him my rookie year
and I’ve seen the pieces to the puzzle, the ability to possibly make it all the way
and I definitely wanted to be a part of something like that.”

(On the personnel along the offensive line and his impressions of them)

“We've had some cross tape through the season so I was able to see the work
that they do. That's a powerful bunch. I came out the same year as (OL)

(Kevin) Dotson so I had some familiarity with him through college and watching
him, (OL) Steve (Avila), (OL) Alaric (Jackson) and (OL) Rob (Havenstein),
that's a good group. Kind of similar to what we had in Detroit. There's some
specialness there so I'm excited to be a part of it.”

(On if there are installments the Rams use that he’s already comfortable
with)

“Oh, yeah. The gap scheme and the duo just in general is probably our bread
and butter in Detroit and glad it’s the bread and butter over here. So it's not
going to be too hard of a transition and things like that are right up my alley.”

(On what he needs to do to protect Stafford and how he would describe
him)

“In Detroit, we called him “the Wizard”. He could figure it all out and he can
make anything happen. I'm excited to be able to protect him and let him make
us look good and make plays happen.”

(On what the first two hours of free agency looked like for him and if he
spoke with anyone from the Rams personally)

“Actually, me and my wife, we were just sitting at home and like I guess 12
o'clock hit. We thought it was going to be like immediate mayhem and kind of
sat there for like 45 minutes and my agent was calling me. He was like, ‘What
do you think of Los Angeles?’ And I was like, ‘That doesn’t sound too shabby.’
And we talked about it and it sounded like the right move, good weather, good
place to be, good winning culture, great staff, and everything overall was just a
plus so we couldn't deny that.”

(On making a life-altering decision on short notice)

“It’s pretty crazy just the amount of time you have. I've been on the outside
looking in at this place for a while, so I kind of had a general idea of what's
going on and a lot of familiarity within our building. Like (Lions General
Manager and former Rams Director of College Scouting) Brad Holmes, he was
from here so I kind of got a feel of the people that they've been around and how
they run things so I kind of got a good feel about how it'd be here.”

(On what it’s like being in Southern California)

“I will say the weather is beautiful. It's excellent and definitely going to miss the
east coast. I've got a lot of roots there. The Midwest, I've started a lot there, but
nothing like new beginnings and no better place to be than here.”

(On what appealed to him about being a part of the Rams offense)

“A lot of similarities and what we do, the gap scheme, play action, and having to
drop back. I'm comfortable in whatever we've had. This will be… I think nine
now, nine different offensive coordinators since I started college. So I'm
comfortable in whatever, it doesn't really matter. But like I said, the pieces to
the puzzle were incredible, whether it's the wide receivers, the running back,
the QB, the O-line, the defense. It's a pretty good team over here so I'm excited
to be a part of it.”

(On his time with the Lions last season and his memories playing against
the Rams in the 2024 Wild Card game)

“Being a part of something in Detroit where for so long the city was dying for a
winner and being able to bring it there and change the trajectory of everything
and bring some light to the situation, it was awesome and there's nothing like it.
When you face the LA Rams, they got a special defense and upfront they got
the guys so being able to be on their team now makes it a lot easier.”

(On how he weighed opportunities in free agency and if he’s grateful an
opportunity came up with the Rams)

“Yeah, once I heard the Rams were willing to do what they did and be able to
go somewhere and potentially win it all, there was no denying it. There were
some teams, maybe we could have done some more, but I wanted the perfect
balance of being able to set my family up for life and be able to win football
games.”

(On the reputation of the Rams around the league among players)

“You just see it from the outside. You see the quarterback. He's second to
none. The pieces to the puzzle are just incredible. And then you see Coach
McVay and how they run things. It’s an approachable place you feel. And you
feel like it’s somewhere you can get settled in pretty fast and that's why I felt
like it was a good fit for me.”

Offensive Lineman Kevin Dotson

(On what the negotiation process was like for him and how he feels now
with the extension)

“Overall I feel great about how we got it done. The process at times can be a
little stressful because both sides want something, but I think we came to a
pretty good solution in the end that everybody felt good about.”

(On if it was important for him to get the deal done before formal free
agency began)

“I wouldn't say it was a really important thing. It was just one of the things that I
would rather have done. If I can get something done with the Rams, then I was
ready to do that rather than have to do too many talks in the free agency
market.”

(On his thoughts on OL Jonah Jackson, OL Steve Avila, and himself as
the front three on the interior and if he’s had the chance to meet Jackson
yet)

“I haven't really gotten to meet Jonah, but I know of him and how good he is. I
know this is just adding to the offensive line and I feel like Steve will be able to
adapt and get to learn the position.”

(On the major selling point for him to stay at the Rams)

“I think for me personally, it’s being able to come back to the same coach in the
same system for two years in a row and then being in a place that's actually
really enjoyable to be in outside of football also. A big selling point for me was
how I felt day to day in California.”

(On what this contract extension means to him)

“It was great. It was really fulfilling to be able to set my mind on something, find
the plan of attack and be able to really go through with it. It felt great, man. It
just feels like I came in there with a mission and I was able to check all the
boxes even more than I even believed I was going to. So it definitely felt good.”
(On what it is about the Rams’ system that made him want to come back)
“Well for me, it's freedom and I guess just knowing the system so much that I
can be free in the way of thinking less and being able to run off the ball, doing
what I have to without having to second guess myself.”

(On how he felt when he was initially traded in September and what goes
through his head now after having that uncertainty at the beginning of the
season)

“Yeah, it was definitely anxiety-inducing. I kind of knew what it could possibly
be, but you’re just hoping that it’s different. Try to go through camp without
changing who I am. Try not to have any resentment and stuff like that, but I
knew when I had the opportunity that it was one of those things that I was going
to have to take. It was either sit at Pittsburgh and most likely become a backup
or come to the Rams for a little less and still be able to have a chance of
becoming a starter. I think I just took that chance on myself and that's why I say
it feels so good to feel like I fulfilled my mission.”

(On if the anxiety from the trade came from having to learn a whole new
system)

“Yeah, because it's not like I was coming here guaranteed to start. I wasn't
guaranteed to start so when I wasn't getting the playtime at the time, I didn't
know how it was going to happen or how I was going to get that playtime or
when I was ever going to get that playtime. I knew I just needed a chance to
show what I could do and once I got that opportunity, that's when I had to take
full advantage of it.”

(On prior comments made from General Manager Les Snead before the
deal was done about his value and expectation of testing the free market
and what might have changed from those comments to now having a
done deal)

“I just think we had pretty good communication with each other and my agent is
really good at being able to get us to that point where everybody feels
comfortable and being able to get into the situation where we're having talks
about respectable numbers pretty early on. I think they did a good job of not
going how the usual route goes. I asked a lot of people who've been in
contracts before about what's the first, how it's going to start and stuff like that
and they said usually teams gives you a really, really small starting point just to
kind of haggle and they didn't really haggle too much with me or try to start low
balling me at the beginning. Everything felt respectable from the beginning to
end so I think they made the process easy too.”

(On if his teammates chimed in at all about wanting him to stay or if they
left him alone to make a decision)

“They overall know that it's going to be my final decision. They know that teams
are going to do what they need to do to feel comfortable. I talked to people
before about what their process was like. I know a lot of people on the team
were talking to me about (how) they did want me to come back and I wanted to
come back. It was something that pretty much didn't really need to be said.”

(On if he learned anything about preparation during this season that he
can carry into the next season)

“I think one of the things that I learned from getting here is that I can adapt to
different situations and that kind of helps me boost myself in different scenarios
just knowing that I could do this. It gives you a little more confidence in yourself
that you second guess yourself less because I was definitely second guessing
myself on even coming to the Rams. I had a bunch of people telling me, ‘Oh,
you’re going to go there. You’re going to be good. You’re going to be good.’
And I was second guessing myself the whole time until I got to play and then I
started feeling confidence again so I just have to know that I can be confident
from the beginning and I guess starting fast, starting strong can be way easier
than I initially thought.”

(On how the continuity on the offensive line will help him next year)

“Man, the more that you can have the same people, the better and more
confidence we play with, the more belief in the person next to you, so it's
always good to have that same group or at least close to that same group so
we can all have that mindset even more than we did the year prior. At offensive
line, it's one of the best things to have, that kind of continuity.”

(On how he decided on his agent and how he developed a relationship
and level of trust with him)

“I think for agents, the start off can be the…Like when I picked him out of
college, I think we've been laying that groundwork for about three or four years
so I understood what he was capable of from just talking to him about his other
players and stuff that he has. And the Ballengee Group as a whole and how
they operate, it just gave me confidence that he would be able to get the job
done. The people he works with, every single person that I've ever talked to
that he works with has never had a bad thing to say about him so it's always
been pretty good from the beginning to now and can't wait to work with him
some more.”

Tight End Colby Parkinson

(On what drove him to the Rams so quickly)

“Yeah, I think it's just a natural fit. They do a lot of great things on the offense.
(Head Coach) Sean (McVay) does a great job and I think the way I can present
myself as a three down tight end really fits the mold. Excited to get to work,
excited to go earn it out there and have some fun along the way.”

(On if the Rams were straightforward with their intentions and if they
presented something that he really liked)

“I think the negotiations lasted a few hours and that was it. It was back and
forth, back and forth, done. So both parties wanted to get it done as fast as
possible and excited that it happened the way it did.”

(On what’s going through his mind now that he’s a Ram as a Simi Valley
native)

“Yeah, just pure excitement. Obviously, like you said, I grew up around here
and love the area, went to Oaks Christian. So the opportunity to come back
here and have a role in the community is going to be huge for me and to back
in the sunshine and around so many friends and family is going to be a
blessing.”

(On the benefit of going to a team he has some familiarity with given the
Rams and Seahawks are in the same division)

“Yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun playing the Seahawks twice a year. There's a
lot of familiarity also with (Seahawks Offensive Coordinator) Shane (Waldron)
coming from here a couple years ago, so I think it'll be a very natural transition
for me.”

(On if he's noticed a shift in how the Rams play from watching tape)

“Yeah, absolutely. I've been a fan from afar of their offense so I'm excited to be
on the other side of it and be able to help out and help this team win some
games.”

(On if he has any familiarity with Tight Ends Coach Nick Caley and if he’s
met him yet)

“Yeah, so we talked on the phone yesterday at three o'clock central, which was
the first minute that we could talk legally so that was pretty fun to get a phone
call from him. Man, he's awesome. He seems so fired up about getting me in
the building and what we can do together, so looking forward to working with
him and like I said, helping this team win some ball games.”

(On if he’s given any thought to how he’ll approach his new role with TE
Tyler Higbee recovering from his injury)

“Yeah, I mean, Higbee’s definitely going to be a huge influence on my transition
here. I trained with him a little bit last offseason. The past couple years we've
gotten to know each other so having him around is going to be a huge blessing.
I think going into this season, it's not just going to be me being the veteran, he's
going to be a huge, huge help, a huge part of it and he's just as much in the
room as I will be. So looking forward to working with him and the other guys as
well.”

(On what his family’s reaction was when he told them he was coming
back home)

“My dad's in the background throwing his hands up right now (laughs). Just so
excited and so thankful to come back home and be able to play in front of so
many important people in my life, so many role models and like I said earlier,
also to have an influence in the community and do a lot of workaround here is
going to be just a huge blessing.”

(On what he’s appreciated about the Rams offense in the past)

“Just seeing the way that Sean and the staff can work up different designs to
attack, not just one part of the field, but they're working the seams, they're
working those deep ins. They're working the gap scheme a lot. The way they
can do some different things with the single tight end, two tight end sets. It’s
been fun to watch and fun to see Higbee tear it up and looking forward to being
a part of it.”

(On what he thinks he brings specifically to the Rams’ offense that they
haven’t had before)

“I'm not sure I can speak on what they haven't had, but what I do bring as a
tight end is I think a complete tight end, someone that can play all three downs
and stretch the field at the same time, be able to stretch the seams and be a
red zone threat while also being dominant in the run game is kind of what I
pride myself on, so looking forward to being that guy and being a cornerstone
of the offense.”

#HelmetHornsMatter

“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.

“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
