So ... there's a difference this year specifically because the Pac 12 was not the "limp" conference of the power 5 this year. So you have to assume that success and toughness shown are for real.
Now, Latu, from the tape I saw, is a top 5 - top 10 player. Medical is an issue and age is an issue for many clubs, but as long as he clears for me, he's going to be a steal.
Can he set an edge? Yes. He can get upfield in run defense, has better hand placement tech than most college players and has the size and strength to jack up an OT who's flowing outside. 6-5 262 and decent length. He might be better against the run than "outside" pass rush right now.
That said ... he has some splintering moves (I say that because when he wins, it tends to be inside, and half the line goes down as a result). I think he "collapses" the pocket as well as a serious DT splitting a double.
Can he drop? Decently. I think he could carry a wheel route. Is he "good" in coverage? I feel comfy with him because of his length and overall athleticism, but Dallas Turner is more likely to be "good". I'd rather him be rushing the passer on passing downs. If he's pressed, he's got length and height on his side ... I'm curious to see his 3 cone.
In a word, you're getting someone who does something a little new IMO. And this may have been around before, but as offenses get bigger and better it's hard to find defenders who do what he does ... he explodes into the LOS. And often when he wins it's a disaster for the offense ... not just a negative play.
