Staley for me is a no or at least a not yet. For me what separates Staley from say a Morris or a Spags is I am not sure if he is a good defensive coordinator or just a one trick pony. Spags and Morris have been in a lot of locker rooms and have excelled at different styles of defenses over that time in essence they have a lot of tricks in their bag of tricks. Staley has YET to prove if he is JUST a top disciple of one form of defense that while took the league by storm a few years back has been figured out now. If Staley's tenure at the Chargers was the defense was good he just couldn't fix the offense then maybe but that was not the case. His Chargers defense was much worse than the Rams with comparable in some years if not "better" (at least on paper) tn other years talent. I prefer the Ravens DB coach, maybe we can catch that "Staley wave" of top acolyte of the defense the league hasn't figured out yet while giving McVay time to work against the ascendant defense on a weekly basis in practice.
I get it, but let’s not forget….he was the DC of the best Rams defense most of us have ever seen. When was the last time if ever the Rams had the #1 defense in the NFL? You would have to go back to the 1960’s and offense wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire back then.
Staley has proven record as a DC, let’s remember that…he won’t be asked to be the head coach and be the face of a franchise, he will be doing what he does best. Lock him in the lab and let him concentrate on one thing. I wouldn’t be upset with the hire.
