After sleeping on it..the field goal to tie the game

Still doesn't make sense...

There was approx 8 minutes left in the game.


That is enough time to tie the game with the FG, and then leave enough time for the 9'ers to do what they're gonna do (possibly score 3 or 7) and leave the Lions 2 minutes, and a time out or 2, to go win the game, if needed.

Basically a 2-for-1 as they say in B-Ball.

You could argue, if there was only 4-5 minutes left, you are leaving them "too much time". Meaning leave only enough time for them to go win and this is to go the superbowl.

AND, let's say the Lions get the first down, it's very possible all they do is burn a little more time off the clock and get the same 3 point FG from closer and now with 4 minutes to go and the above scenario plays out.

Really no matter how you add it up, tie the game.
