There's a great deal that goes on unseen to fans.
Wentz has a reputation (I don't know if its deserved or not) of wearing out his welcome pretty fast. And maybe that's why a guy with his level of talent, his relatively young age (he's only 31 for cripes sake), in good health, and so much NFL starter experience including on the biggest of stages and the biggest of games, was sitting at home, unwanted by 32 NFL teams in a QB starved league.
The thing is, did Snead and McVay see him as a kind of last resort, crossed their fingers and hoped maybe they could handle him to make him a viable back up for a few games? And now that he's been on the team awhile, do they still think of him the same way, or do they see, perhaps, a better Wentz and would like to have him back?
For Wentz, would he like to stay with a winning team and great organization as a back-up, or if he got a better offer for more money and a chance to start for a 2nd tier or worse team, which would he choose? That is, hope for the Mayfield opportunity?
I have no feel for it. Sometimes guys just need to be in the right situation and humble themselves to know it and accept it for the love of the game. Others, not so much.
