Agreed, 21. Injury risk in inevitable and part of the game. Putting players at
unneccessary risk has one source.
How these key skill players (not just Puka, but Stafford and Kupp and others as well) are used will determine a lot of their longevity and injury history until they retire or expire. And that's entirely in McVay's hands.
And so far (and I hate to say it) he has shown a glaring blind spot where risk to his key skill players is concerned. He puts them at risk unneccessarily (sometimes foolishly) instead of protecting them - and the team pays the price along with the individual player. It has cost games that could be won.
During the game, in crunch time, he gets so enmeshed in strategy and playcalling that he
doesn't see the condition or risks to which he is subjecting his players. I can think of too many examples. So, I imagine, can many of you.
How to fix? For openers, get an OC who is treated as more than an glorified waterboy during game time. Let him call plays - or at least have sideline dialogue with the head coach so he can
point out the obvious when the head coach gets so
hyperfocused on his own fixations that he can't see what is
obvious to everybody but him.
