Los Angeles Rams Transcripts - Head Coach
Sean McVay, Receiver Cooper Kupp - Friday,
November 24 2023

Head Coach Sean McVay

(Opening remarks)

“Okay, injury wise the only guy that will be out for the game will be (Dcool smiley
Quentin Lake. Unfortunate, his hamstring was kind of bothering him. He's such
a tough player. He was able to finish the game, but he tweaked it with a couple
plays left like I had mentioned to you guys earlier in the week. Those soft
tissues are things that you can't be careful enough with. Then everybody else
should be good to go.”

(On if WR Cooper Kupp will play Sunday)

“Cooper will be good, yeah.”

(On what Cardinals QB Kyler Murray brings to the Cardinals offense)

“Yeah, the ability to be able to create and extend plays as good as anybody,
the dynamic athleticism. He can certainly make all of the throws. They can
utilize him as a runner so he can change the math in their favor. He's a great
playmaker that elevates people around him. He's got a play energy about
himself. It's really important to be able to try to just keep him contained because
he's an explosive playmaker that can make you pay with his legs or obviously
his arm.”

(On if Murray looks the same as before his injury)

“Oh yeah, he does. Yeah, in the two games you look at against Atlanta and
Houston, there's a dynamic athleticism that's always been a consistent theme
for him. He's throwing the ball really well. I think he's seeing the field well. I
think they do a nice job of being able to utilize him and take advantage of his
athleticism while still protecting him. You definitely have seen that the last
couple weeks.”

(On if Kupp looks like he’s 100% healthy)

“You know, I think he'd have to be able to tell you that. I thought he looked
good yesterday. It's always tough because you try to simulate game-like
settings as much as possible and you get the adrenaline going, the magic of
the jersey if you will, but I thought he looked good yesterday. We were a little bit
limited in regard to exactly what we were doing. I'll probably have a good feel
for how he moves around today, but his feedback and just looking at it from afar
seems like he's feeling pretty good.”

(On if Kupp will be a full participant in practice today)

“He will be, yes.”

(On how RB Kyren Williams has progressed throughout the week)

“It's gotten better and better. He's got a play energy and he's got just such a
good charisma and presence. That play energy I think is one of the better ways
that I could describe it in terms of he elevates guys around him, he's so
engaged, he's so coachable. This is a guy that…he loves the game. He loves
to compete. I think you guys have seen that when he's out there and his
teammates love playing with him and I thought he's had a really good week and
it's good to be able to get him back.”

(On if RB Royce Freeman has earned the RB #2 spot based on his
performance the last few weeks)

“He has. I think he's done a really good job and I think he's a good compliment
to some of the things that Kyren brings to the table, physical presence. It's a big
deal that he can also contribute in the kicking game. To be able to do some of
the things that he's able to do for (Special Teams Coordinator) Chase
(Blackburn) and for (Assistant Special Teams Coach) Jeremy Springer on
special teams is a big deal. But a Pros Pro. I thought last week you saw when
we were able to get going offensively, he was able to churn out some tough
physical yards. That's really kind of been on display for the most part since the
Pittsburgh game. I think he has earned that. I think (Running Backs Coach)
Ron Gould has done a great job with that group as a whole.”

(On if he will ease Williams back into action or have him pick up where he
left off in terms of snap count)

“I think we want to be able to give him a good workload, but I think that was
something that we had identified. It was unfortunate that he got hurt, but I think
you do want to be cognizant of that's a lot of snaps, especially for what that
position entails and the physical nature at which he plays, some of the things
that we were asking of him. So exactly what that balance looks like, you want to
be able to ride the hot hand. You want to make sure that you're able to get him
in the flow of the game, but 95% is something that we definitely want to be
mindful of taking some snaps off him.”

(On being in the hunt for a playoff spot and if he addresses that with the
team)

“I think the guys know that. The reality is this, they put themselves in a position
by handling their business coming off the bye. The only way that you continue
to put yourself in position is by being able to take care of your business and
what we can do this week to try to go get our fifth win. And so the guys know
that, but the reality is you can kind of check both boxes by saying, ‘Hey, you
want to continue to play important football into December and into the first week
of January, then let's do a good job of handling what we can control and that's
playing a good game against a really tough opponent. The way that they play
people and the different things that they present as far as the challenges are
very real. And so we've got to be able to go do that and play well in that window
that we're allotted.’ Then you can continue to say, ‘All right, well what are we
going to do next? Same exact thing,’ and you keep yourself in the fight.”

(On the possibility of DB Quentin Lake being listed as day-to-day or week-
to-week)

“Today, I'll have a better idea about that. Because of the soft tissues, want to
be able to kind of just get a better gauge and usually the best way to do that is
to have a little bit more time. Without leaving him susceptible to having any sort
of setbacks, kind of get a measuring stick of okay, the MRIs can show one thing
but some of the strength and just overall mobility and overall exertion exercise
that you can do without exposing him to further injury gives you an idea of, all
right, are we talking about a week? We talking about two to four weeks? I think
we'll have a better idea after today, I'm hoping.”

Receiver Cooper Kupp

(On how he is feeling)

“I'm feeling good. Obviously don't feel a hundred percent but that's football at
this point in the season anyways so it's something we're handling.”

(On realizing when he would be able to play)

“I didn't really know until you go out there and try to run around with it a little bit
yesterday and think we’ll look at the next couple days you're able to continue to
get better and be good by game day. You can get close and run onto the field
and get the adrenaline boost, (you can) usually push through some stuff.”

(On if he feels like he’s been dealing with one thing after another this
year)

“Yeah, it does. And so, yeah, it's been very frustrating. Kind of dating back even
just to how last year went. Yeah, it's frustrating but it's unfortunately part of the
game. You play enough snaps, you're going to get hurt and hopefully I've done
enough over the last year and a half to buy myself some time moving forward.”

(On if there was a sense of relief yesterday after moving around)

“Yeah, that is. You just never really know what it's going to be like until you
have to get out there and actually play football, put your foot on the ground,
make the cuts and things like that. So you’re going to go out there and go full
speed competitively. There's nothing you can do treatment wise to see how
you're going to react to that so it was good to be able to go out there and
feeling like there's optimism.”

(On if playing on grass helps significantly)

“Yes, it does. I've been pretty clear on my stance on the grass and turf
situation, but it's much better being on grass. That surface, as a receiver,
having run as many routes and done it as long as I have on turf and on grass,
it's just significantly better on grass.”

(On if he felt his ankle was feeling good enough to come back into the
game last Sunday)

“I wanted to give it a shot and just be out there and compete with the guys.
You're frustrated. I want to get back out there. But you got to trust the training
staff at the end of the day. I wanted to get back out there. I was pushing to get
back out there but deemed that wasn't the best option for me. So wasn't able to
go in, but the guys were able to pull out a ‘W’ and who knows if I would've gone
out there what would've happened and hurt myself more or whatever. All things
considered, the fact that the guys were able to pull out a ‘W’ and I feel like I do
today, it was probably the right decision.”

(On if it was the same ankle from last year)

“Yes.”

(On if this ankle injury is related to his last one)

“I don't think so. I got stepped on, so sometimes it happens. You happen to get
stepped on and it rolls and there are some big guys out there that can create
some force.”

(On how Williams' return will help the offense)

“Yeah, man, I'm so excited to have Kyren back. I thought the guys have been
totin the rock for us… I think RB Darrell Henderson did a great job. (Rcool smiley Royce
(Freeman) obviously has been great. With Kyren, just the energy that he brings.
You see what he was able to do, I think last time we played Arizona, and he
runs hard. He will be able to do a lot of things back there. When you have great
football players on the sidelines, it's great to have those guys. Having Kyren
come back, he's a special player.”

(On his time with Ravens WR Odell Beckham Jr., who is coming back to
SoFi Stadium, and the memories that stick out)

“Yeah, man, there's a lot. There's a lot. Obviously, cherished that time that we
had back in ‘21. Special football player, special guy. The way he handled
himself, the teammate that he was going through that year, being able to learn
the offense the way that he did and just the intent that he came in every single
day with, it was pretty special to see. So yeah, a lot of good memories with him
and wish him the best.”

#HelmetHornsMatter

“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.

“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
