Well I have heard the point of the soft coverages was to stop explosive plays and when the team feared the offense wouldn't be up to standard they made it even more passive/soft to stop explosives. The off coverage everyone hated for the most part. This year since McVay felt the offense would be better he allowed for the defense to play tighter coverage which by definition exposes you to more explosives that along with the fact that the Rams talent level in the secondary is very depleted leads to allowing the 5th most explosive plays. The Rams are now unable to cover a top 10 WR something that despite how much people like to say otherwise could never have been said about our defense the previous 4-5 seasons, cough Ramsey. Outside of Devante Adams, most top notch WR's used to be held below their expected outputs when facing the Rams, now we are giving season renaissances. The Bengals, the Steelers, the Cowboys WR's came into the Rams game with questions and left with accolades.
