McVay is an enigma

McVay turned the Rams around in a dramatic way in 2017. By the next year, however, he began to show tendencies that I described here using the word clueless (this honest criticism wasn't well received here, but that doesn't matter to me). It may seem contradictory, but it is possible to be a genius and, at the same time, to have certain glaring blindspots. Not getting a competent kicker for the 2023 season is only one of many examples. McVay actually started showing signs of 'cluelessness' late in the 2017 season. The Rams were in a good position to make a run for the Super Bowl that season, but he let off the gas and the Rams were unprepared for the playoffs. Others have gone into great detail in accurately pointing out other examples of McVay's puzzling decisions. So there is no need to include a list here.
