I've heard Aikman for long enough.
I'd like to hear Buck with someone else. Someone with a bit of humor, maybe a hint of personal warmth, maybe someone who makes it sound as it he's really excited about what he's doing and conveys that excitement to the fans, somebody with a bit of a positive and engaging personality showing through - somebody who could check even one or maybe more of those boxes would be a step up from Aikman. He fails on all those counts. Somebody like that - and would allow Buck to shine. As is, and has been for years, he is carrying Aikman. Buck keeps the excitement level pumped up with his play-by-play. That's part of the color man's job.
Aikman's glowering glumness that you see pre-game on his near-expressionless (save for a look or resentful boredom) comes through his voice. "Good job there..." unimaginative, disengaged, bored and boring, repetitive, bottom line, no fun to listen to.
I'd rather hear some guys from this board, miked up from their couches in front of the TV set, doing the color for a game.
Or maybe, just maybe, put Terry and Howie in the booth with Buck - let them tell us what's going on while Buck does the play-by-play. That'd be fun. For me, Aikman isn't fun. He's just there. And that, for what he's paid to do, isn't enough.
