McVay picked up the tab for that one immediately after the game. His reasoning was that he didn't want to make two position switches in his offensive line by moving Noteboom over and then filling the right guard position with another substitution.
I can see that.
The problem is that against a pro-bowl-level rush from the right defensive side he needed extra blocking and didn't send that in via an extra tight end to chip.
THAT was the coaching error of greater magnitude - not moving Boom was a lesser error - IF he had covered his bet with an extra blocker rather than worrying about taking an eligible receiver off the field to accomodate the need for blocking.
Being enamored or obsessed, if you will, with his passing strategy has practical consequences.
