That is correct. Jets had gone to AFC championship game the year before ('98) and blew a 10-0 early 3rd quarter lead to the Broncos. 1999 was supposed to be the Jets best shot to win a Super Bowl since SB III. In Week 1, Vinny lunges forward for a ball that was fumbled (by Curtis Martin, if memory serves) and ruptures his Achilles. I'll never forget the sight of him pounding the turf repeatedly with his fist. - everyone knew it was serious in that moment.

Jets season was over Week 1 (they finished 8-8, using the likes of Rick Mirer). However, that very same day (9/12/99) at the Trans World Dome in St. Louis an unknown QB threw for 309 yards and 3 TDs against the Ravens in his first career start...

Who winds up being champs in 1999? I think we know the answer to that one!
