In no particular order:
Ron Gould RB coach. I’m projecting here but I see him as a steady, calming, yet competent coach that will maximize production from that room. Just perfect for these young RB’s (including Evans) as McVay places greater emphasis on running game.
Ryan Wendell OL coach. Might be a ‘steal’ hire. I’m sensing his influence toward having a more physical OL style to better compete with the likes of the 49ers. He likely had influence on the Avila and McClendon picks, too. These were ‘statement’ types of picks, imo. Looking like a VERY good hire at this point.
Jimmy Lake Asst HC. I’m projecting here with Lake, too, but it’s based on his considerable track record with secondary players and that is just what the doctor ordered. Potentially worth his weight in gold if given free rein.
Aubrey Pleasant DB/Defensive game Coordinator. His reputation and past performance here justifies my enthusiasm with this hire. Sky is the limit for our young secondary players if Pleasant is allowed his say.
Chase Blackburn ST Coordinator. I was kinda blasé about this hire when it was announced, but boy was I wrong. This guy took over a literally empty ST specialist room and now we seem to have the best punter, long snapper, and 2 of the best place kickers (in terms of accuracy) in the entire class. And with a highly regarded potential returner in Xavier Smith in the wings. Damn! Color me VERY impressed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m hardly displeased with our other asst coaches, quite the contrary. But these 4 particularly have made me happy that they were among McVay’s 11 coaching hires. This is potentially among McVay’s very best coaching staffs overall since he’s been HC. Morris is the only one that I have any reservations on at this time and if he gives his own D assistants free rein I think he will be very pleased with the results. And possibly a new HC hire next offseason.
