McVay has pet picks and Snead goes and gets 'em for him. Their drafting is a collaborative process. In the long run the team does OK with the trades and drafts that Snead puts togther to build a roster, and he keeps the administrative culture alive with his approach.
Snead never plays
mea culpa when McVay's picks go south or sideways. He couldn't and still maintain the working relationship that brings the team's long-term success. So, we get our annual undersized skill player.
Any of us who have even been in middle management positions where we either find a way, as Snead has, to
work collaboratively and achieve our goals within a matrix, either that or
fail due to lack of the leadership and facilitating skills required, appreciate what Snead has been able to accomplish.
In short, coach gets the QB pick here - because it's here, and because he wants it. Maybe coulda been had later, maybe not, and if not, Snead would have been tagged with the failure. We need a backup QB now and my guess is that McVAy via Snead had their eye on this guy all along.
As-is we get a backup QB for cheap for a few years, while positions of first-string need are solidly addressed.
