I agree OSRF. Funny you picked that comparison because the Steelers could pick Levis at 32.
We’re talking about unicorns. In the draft you want to be in a position to pick freaks.
I listened to Braylon Edwards on a Lions podcast yesterday. (Didn’t give me a good vibe when he played, but he had a lot of great insights when he spoke about different scenarios.)
One scenario the host asked him: Do the Lions pick Anthony Richardson at #6?
He answered who do you want as your best player on the field? Well, the guy who handles the ball.
Goff is really good, but is he the best player on the field? No. Anthony Richardson would be, so you take him.
Levis isn’t as fast, or maybe not as mobile as Richardson, but clearly Goff isn’t, the Wolf isn’t etc.
If you have that raw material, then you chisel away at it (without lopping off a huge chunk), and make the statue of David.
When the Browns took Mayfield first, I said to myself (because I was the only guy who would listen), that they should have taken Sequon Barkley first and Josh Allen 4th. I actually said that. No lying here.
And Allen is now a darling of the league, MVP candidate, and may win a Lombardi during his career. Cleveland’s loss.
But Levis is as good as the time the team invests in him grasping the game and all it’s nuances. The only thing that can prevent that is if Levis is uncoachable, or challenged intellectually. I have heard he’s smart. And with the huge chip on his shoulder by not getting drafted in the first round, I’m betting he’s coachable.
