would be interesting---
Not sure the scheme would allow it--Rams use the so-called 5T in their base . .. and in that there are two edges
so in passing situations it would be one of them, usually, that would stand up and rush the passer.
Not saying you idea cannot work - it just would be a different approach
Here is current scheme and what the edges do, they are the "S" and "W"
here, highlighed in yellow and pink--based on the which rushed and which drops
This is not my chart--Rams do a left and right, not strong and weak-so it
really should be "L" and "R" rather than "S" and "W"
And the purple is Aaron Donald, the 3T, he switches sides depending
on a couple of things...and the 5t is the turquoise
This chart calls both the guys "DEs" - but Rams call Donald a DT (3tech)
and the 5T (your hypothetical) a DE
Anyway
In passing situations the "S" and W" become the DEs and
the "DE" (3t and 5t) become the DTs
just follow the colors.
Now, you scenario, Donald is the purple--
and his role stays the same.
But, your proposed hybrid---is the blue--
he would be the "DE" or 5t in base but then
a outside DE in nickel, and our edges often stand
up and rush or they can put hand down--it is up to them
So, what that would mean is one of the yellow or pink guys
would take the other edge and one would go to the bench
that is unless he can play defensive tackle
In the first scenarios, I just assume the NT leaves
Anyway it would look more like this
I imagine of one of Dead's guys could play the 5t, the "blue:
in base and then the edge it could work
If you wanted to keep the same guys on (except for NT)
then one of the edges (pink or yellow) could play DT
if he were a big enough guy--or it could be the NT
or someone from the bench, a Morgan Fox-type
so, it would be a novel approach
ALSO---
If you mean a guy who can be the pink or yellow---
and play that DT in rush downs---that is also
interesting...
i.e. Tuli as say pink -then
a DT in nickel---
that could look like these, the "inverse"
the orange would be an edge you'd have to
bring off the bench, maybe a young edge
who cannot learn fast enough to play as
the "S" or "W" (pink or orange)
