Are we just having an estate sale and biting the bullet even with Stafford amd Kupp on the team?
All based off what I’ve read and interviews I’ve listened to. My opinions only so I could be way off:
Prior to and immediately after winning the SuperBowl the Rams felt confident that the model in which they invested in key core positions , drafted players who could contribute immediately , and filled out the roster with cheap inexperienced players who loved football, displayed leadership in college, but maybe played better than they tested and measured. McVay, Stafford, Kupp, and Donald would be tied to one another for the next two or three seasons contractually.
The new NFL year for the Rams would include the annual poaching of assistant coaches, and an unprecedented injury filled season. A close to burned out McVay, unhappy with his own leadership last season , hastily made assistant coaching hires, and a rapidly aging roster likely made McVay and the front office drastically pivot from the plan that helped them win a championship a season earlier.
Imagine you are McVay or Snead what position groups can you place a check next to for the next few seasons.
QB 35 yr old SB Champion, yet has had elbow issues and and a spinal contusion that caused him to go on IR. Backup QB situation?
RB room: Productive yet disgruntled former 2nd rd pick who was sent home for a few weeks mid season . Released spot starter Henderson mid season. Williams could be an ideal 3rd down back drafted in the 5th round who missed the preseason with a broken ankle.
Go down the list OL, WR, TE, DL, OLB, EDGE, CB, DBs, Special Teams you get my point.
I don’t feel like this roster had the depth, and talent enough to justify the inability to draft more players, sign a key 1-2 FAs, by some of the contracts the team was under this year and beyond.
Flo, Wagner, ARob and Ramsey weren’t going to magically take over games next season like Kupp and AD can. It stinks as a fan after waiting so long to witness another SB win, but the more I thought about it the more that I think I would have been more upset if the Rams stayed the course while trying to convince the fan base that this team has the players to get right back to the SB, and 2022 was just an anomaly based on injuries.
I hope the Rams get from under all the dead cap, and unfortunate contracts and are able to draft and develop players and remain a consistently good team. I think we might see a couple of surprise moves on offense in the hopes to score a bunch of points next year while helping out a likely young and raw defense.
