Raheem Morris met with Indianapolis Colts well into evening

There are many LA Rams fans who are cheering on the possibility of LA Rams Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris being hired as the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. And, sadly, not all of the reasons are kind and positive. But let’s give folks the benefit of the doubt, as the LA Rams once again face the reality of losing another defensive coordinator.

Like it or not, the reality is that while fans bashed the guy throughout 2021, he led the team’s defense into the NFL Playoffs and to a Super Bowl LVI victory. Before anyone tries to discount or diminish that achievement, he entered the playoffs having just lost both starting safeties to injuries.

His solution was both innovative and deadly effective. He persuaded former Rams safety Eric Weddle to forego his two-year NFL retirement and come back to play in the Rams’ secondary. He next promoted backup safety Nick Scott. Ultimately Weddle became an outstanding starter and the LA Rams won four consecutive playoff games to claim their first Lombardi Trophy for the city of Los Angeles, California.

You might think that those heroics might buy some goodwill with Rams fans in 2022. But that is not exactly what happened. And now, the fans are cheering for the likelihood of losing another defensive coordinator, the only one to help the franchise win a Super Bowl for LA, in the hopes of spinning the wheel and trying again.

Well, the old saying is ‘be careful what you wish for,’ because his second interview, now down to just a handful of candidates., is reportedly going extremely well. So well, in fact, that its continued on into the evening. That is a very very good sign.

Raheem Morris is having a lengthy in-person interview with the #Colts today. Was told Morris was still with the team as of early evening. Morris is one of several candidates as part of Indy's second round of talks.

And why not? The career of Rahee Morris is ideally suited for a team like the Indianapolis Colts, a team that hired Jeff Saturday to be the interim coach. The plan? The Colts wanted a leader, a person who could instill both fun and accountability back into the team’s locker room. The really great news about Raheem Morris is that is his wheelhouse. And beyond that, he has a depth of NFL coaching experience that few candidates can match.

Morris is ripe for a new HC opportunity

The NFL career of Raheem Morris‘ coaching track has included five different NFL teams. He has worked with Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan, Jay Gruden, Robert Quinn, and now Sean McVay. He served as a head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons and as interim head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for the latter half of one season.

Is he ready for another shot? Yes.

The LA Rams stand to be awarded two compensatory third-round picks if Morris is hired by the Colts, and those have proven to be valuable draft picks indeed. But is it worth the energy and effort to hire a new defensive coordinator, retool the defense to suit their scheme, and hope that the players all ‘get it,’ in time to put up enough resistance to win some football games?

I’m not so sure. But if this is good news for you, stay tuned. The situation is changing rapidly, and I would not be surprised to learn of a Colts’ decision, whether it’s Raheem Morris or not, in the next day or so.

This late evening news is the kicker for me. I believe that the Colts are likely to hire Raheem Morris. But that decision is not official . . . yet.
