Quoting BRO here…

”Another question: Upon reflection of the offensive performance this year, would you revise your expectations for the defense? If so, what's the difference (if any) pre and post-season?”

Projecting O performance for ‘23 based upon expectations for D in ‘23 is unknowable.

Too many unpredictable moving parts here for even a Cray computer.

My apologies. I could've been a lot clearer with my question.

What were your expectations for the defense (PPG Allowed) heading into the 2022 season?

And now that the season has concluded, would you revise those expectations (given the offenses performance)?

E.G.: At the beginning of the season, I expected the defense to allow 19 ppg over the season. But had I known that the offense would suffer so many injuries, I would've revised my expectations to X ppg).

I'm just trying to see if the defense met your general expectations in the most important category.

Thanks for the clarification, BRO.

I don’t generally think of the D in terms of ppg, although it does make perfect sense to do so.

Here are my general thoughts about ‘22 Rams D from 30,000 feet.

Rams have future first-ballot HOF’ers in their prime in AD, Wagner, and Ramsey. So I think that they should have finished top 5-7 in any category you choose, including ppg. There are also quite a few quality -layers in the supporting cast for the Big 3.

I think Morris has swung too far in the direction of super soft zone coverages. Adjusting within the game and against different opponents would be effective. The nan simply can’t seem to adjust (which I always admired in Staley, btw). I want to be very clear about this. Some soft zone is fine and desirable, but Morris’ version is the softest in the damned league! Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. As is, quality QB’s just feast on Morris’ D.

Tackling could be a lot better.

I STILL can’t get over not protecting the sidelines agains Brady in that final drive. That’s high school level strategy. Unforgivable at the NFL level.

Questionable decisions have been made as to which players start over others and how they’re schemed, plus an alarming number of youngsters for whom Rams had high expectations never seemed to develop OR simply never got snaps. Such as:

Burgess
Rochell
Kendrick
Lake
Durant
Rapp (man without a position since Wagner signed)

Took forever to try Hoecht at Edge. And speaking of Edge, who signed off that Hollins and Lewis would be sufficient?

Not sure using Ramsey at ‘star’ is best for overall D.

As to the future for Rams D?

If Morris stays I don’t expect any changes (or improvement).

If Morris gets hired away as HC, or gets relieved of duty by McVay (like some face saving ‘promotion’) then I think there is real hope that substantial improvements will occur with essentially the same players already on the roster. DC’s such as Fangio, Staley, or some other gem that McVay resonates with with imagination and balance. Coaching matters.

Does this help?
