The X1 is really small compared to your average SUV. Good looking, especially interior, and built to last. But expensive maintenance and repairs.
I would strongly consider the new Subaru large SUV (Ascent). The Symetrical AWD is the best there is in the snow. (comes standard)
Next would be the Subaru Forrester with the same AWD system. (comes standard) It is built on a truck frame so has a really good road clearance.
Then the Subaru Outback which is a little bigger than the Forrester but has less road clearence. Its more like a station wagon. It too has the Symetrical AWD.
I now own a Highlander AWD and it rivals the Subaru but much larger-except for the Ascent which was not yet on the market when I bought the Highlander. It is very nice inside and extremely comfortable. Been in blizzard white out conditions in South Dakota with it and it was true to the road. Excellent.
