but I would have loved to have rode a train across county back in the 1940's
doing it today would be cool , and the wife and I have talked about it a couple times , they have those train tours out there in the Rockys
but..........
it still wouldn't be the the same ,
1940's war time trains , the way people dressed , talked , passing through small towns at the height of their population booms , shopping at the mom and pops drug stores ,eating at diners , etc .
when I was a kid , we lived a couple blocks from the farmers elevator , and grain cars would come in to town all the time , as a kid , we spent many hours playing on those train cars , in and out , running along the walk way on top , jumping from one car to the next , some of us weren't very old , still amazes me today that none of us got hurt falling between cars as we jumped , rode the cars a few times to the edge of town , or , as far as we wanted to go knowing we would have to walk back
