depending on the song, obviously.
Me and the bass player are the only two that can read music... but in this band we don't. All by ear.
If we can't do justice to the song we pass on it.... mostly that's due to the instruments used. Easy example... if a song features a great piano part then we can't play it - we have no keyboard player.
What takes us the longest is working out the harmony. None of us are truly singers... but we can all 'fake' it. Another slow process is intro's and endings... which we have never gotten right to this day.
So the 'typical' song I'd say we have down enough to play it at a gig in a few minutes BECAUSE... we don't choose very challenging songs. We choose popular songs... you play a song everyone likes and you can almost completely muff it and it will still work.
We HAVE, in the past, and many times... played a song we've never played before while at a gig. And NOT just requests, though we do those as well... but rather a song one member says 'we need to play' we'll all listen to, without practicing together, then play it at a gig. - JamesJM
