They had no way to coordinate. That's why I mentioned that each unit just followed their own unit commander, and in each case, he flew by the seat of his pants. They weren't centrally commanded while in the air and radio contact was all within a given unit. What the shipboard higher ups did, basically, was decide when to launch, and then wait.
Unless you accept the explanation that a Higher Power just decided it was time to turn things around against the Japanese. and so that Higher Power orchestrated things. And that explanation is a little eerie because as it happens, sheer damm luck (and dogged bravery) combined to turn the entire war around in 5 minutes.
