shooting video in HD is like shooting in the caveman days, now.. ya gotta shoot 4K now and the goPros have been doing 4K for several versions.. the biggest improvements goPro have made are image stabilization and going 4K.. Unfortunately, my GP5 only allows image stabilization up to 2.7K - not all the way up to 4K.. If the GP7 does image stabilization up to 4K, then I'll get one.. and here's why:
As you know, the GPs don't have zoom.. But, shooting at 4K, which is 4x HD resolution (1920x1080), that allows you to crop the subject matter to HD res (1920x1080) in effect allowing you to zoom in during post production.. Image stabilization is critical here since every little movement can be magnified by cropping like this.. If you shoot on a tripod, or other fixed stand or surface, image stabilization wouldn't be as critical.. However, on dives, its MEGA critical to me because I'm not only holding the camera and aiming and shooting, most of the time I'm fighting through currents, and what not, and currents are the killer of smooth shots.. so is just the act of swimming while shooting.. I look at my new stabilized footage and compare it to my old unstabilized footage and the old stuff will make me dizzy..
