but there are many original engines still powering old aircraft. Most, however, have been rebuilt so many times that anything 'original' is probably gone by now.

In general aviation it's mandatory to do a complete overhaul every "X" amount of hours, varying a little with the type of engines. First they'll to a top overhaul... then a major.
