Here's the beef stew recipe I use. I've tried others but this one was by far the best one. You can always
tweak it to your own personal tastes, but I make it exactly as written. It's pretty yummy and really good left over!
Old-Time Beef Stew
Ingredients
• 2 pounds stew beef
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 2 cups water or beef broth
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 clove garlic, minced or 1 tsp minced garlic
• 1 or 2 bay leaves
• 1 medium onion, sliced
• 4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon paprika
• Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
• 4-5 potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
• 1 16 oz bag of frozen Classic mixed vegetables
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch (or flour)
• 2 tablespoons A-1
Directions
1. Use a skillet to sear meat on all sides in hot oil. When browned, transfer to a stew pot.
2. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours.
3. Remove bay leaves. Add potatoes. Cover and simmer 30 to 40 minutes longer.
4. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups of hot stew liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 2 tablespoons flour and the hot liquid. Stir until smooth and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly. Add the A-1.
5. Add frozen veggies. Cook until veggies are no longer frozen.
Serve with a hot pan of cornbread and a salad. Yummy!
Note: Use the timer on your stove whenever cooking. It will help your food to be cooked properly.
