I live close to an area where they fight dogs. The first thing I was told by our neighbor when I moved into our area was not to leave your dog outside because someone will take it and use it as a bait dog. I cannot believe its 14 years later and I still live near this crap.
We walked our dog for the first few months when we moved here but it just got scarier every trip. I thought about buying a stun gun and/or pepper spray. I opted for a hammer. Eventually we just stayed indoors. My daughter is almost 8. We aren't outside nearly as much as we should be. We just stay in our yard and almost never go further. Maybe a bike ride down our 12 home development.
Are you planning on some kind of protection? And thank goodness it attacked your dog and not you or your wife directly. At the same time its a terrible thing to happen to your dog. The only dog that can match a pit bull is another pit bull.... which I guess is why some people get them.
Thank you for sharing this story. We are moving to a nicer area, in a different town, by the end of the year but even that might not be safe; Wild dogs, coyotes and other dogs. So I have this idyllic image in my head of my family safely and cheerfully riding bikes through the neighborhood. We should always be prepared...
