I've come across lots of pits and pit mixes, and I've never had a bad run-in with any of them.
Actually, I had a lost pit digging through my trash two nights ago. One of the friendliest dogs I've ever met; she didn't even care about my cat. Can't say the same for the cat, though.
I knew she was lost, but I could tell somebody was taking good care of her. So, I made a pallet for her outside and gave her some water. Poor thing drank two full bowls.
Took her to the no-kill shelter the next day, and they said someone had called looking for a dog matching her description. I gave the shelter lady $20 in case the owner didn't show up.
I know it's cliche, but it really does come down to the owner. As long as those dogs get socialized with people and other pets at an early age, they're going to be fine.
Actually, and I don't know if this is still true, German Shepherds were responsible for more bites on humans than any other breed, including pit bulls.
